- FOG LIGHT WIRING -Toyota's original release of the RAV4 in the US included a HELLA Fog Light Option. Due to conflicts with varying state laws regarding use of auxillary lighting, Toyota discontinued this option. Even though the fog light option is no longer available, the wiring is still intact! (These connections do not work on the 1998 model.) The following 5 STEPS should help in locating these connections. Please note: Using these connections for FOG or DRIVING lights allows them only to be on when your "LOW BEAM" headlights are on.
STEP 1
![]()
Location of under hood connection. It's a single-prong, GRAY plug, (single RED wire in a BLACK sleeve), taped to harness located top right-hand side of radiator, tucked under metal framing, directly in front of alternator. Connect your lights to this plug.
STEP 2
Pull open the access panel to the fuse block, lower left of dashboard, in front of your left knee. Insert new 15AMP fuse into upper right-hand corner slot.
STEP 3
-
Remove (4) interior panels as shown. A = Driver's Door Threshold Panel - Pull center, straight up, carpet side. B = Driver's Side Kick Panel - Remove 16mm plastic nut, reach behind nut area, pull away. C = Dash Panel - Remove 2 bottom corner screws, remove bottom left screw of radio panel to help relieve tension on top right tab, pull straight out on top corner tabs. D = Metal Substructure - Remove 3 - 10mm bolts.
STEP 4(a)
-
[Most '96's] This relay block is located behind side kick panel in DRIVER'S footwell. The relay you will need to purchase is LIGHT BROWN in color, it matches headlamp relay, located in engine compartment fuse box. (TOYOTA Part #90987-02006) Install the relay in the middle socket top of relay block as shown.
STEP 4(b)
-
[Most '97's] If there are NO pins/wires attatched to the socket in step 4(a), use the relay socket located behind side kick panel in PASSENGER'S footwell. The socket is located on the left side, middle (towards firewall) of the relay block as shown. Use same LIGHT BROWN relay as in 4(a).
(Thank-you, Jack Kovar & Chris Hallock for helping sort out this difference!)
STEP 5
-
Install your switch as follows: Remove dash knock-out plug as shown. Pull out plug for connection. This connector is located in the extreme left-hand-side of the dashboard, it is taped to a large harness, about 4"or 5" directly behind the dash knock-out plugs. It has a small 2-pin GRAY plug, and consists of 2 wires covered with a small BLACK plastic sleeve. One wire is WHITE w/BLACK stripe, the other is RED w/BLACK stripe. Connect your on/off switch to this plug.

If you are undertaking some other RAV4 wiring
project, the following information may help.
ROUTING WIRES THROUGH THE FIREWALL1. Turn your steering wheel counterclockwise, as far as it will allow.
2. In the engine compartment, drivers-side, between strut tower and firewall, (by cruise control assembly, if you have it) feed wires down the (approx. 1˝" diam.) hole in the side. (If you have cruise control, removing the cruise control cover will give you better access to this hole. To remove the cover, simply pull UP on the end which the cables exit. It is not necessary to remove it on the '98 model, the cover is smaller.)
3. Remove 2 bolts, 3 screws, above front drivers-side mud flap, peel up plastic fenderwell liner. Don't worry about hurting the liner, it is very flexible, just pull up on it and rest it on the tire.
4. Behind this liner, towards the top, you will find a large harness, routed through a rubber grommet. (See photo below.) On this grommet is a small *nipple. Cut off the tip of this nipple, route your wires into this new hole. Wires will come out, inside vehicle, near fuse block area. Wrap tape or a tie wrap, around the wire/nipple hole for a tight seal. *If you have the RS3000 factory alarm, this nipple will already be snipped and the hole will contain a RED wire and a BLACK wire, covered with a BLACK plastic sleeve. In this case, just poke a hole through the grommet for your new wires.![]()
Hope this is clear =8-) Happy RAVin' ! KS
