We received some brief info and updated photos from a "friend" this morning. The photos below are from the Feb. 16th issue of AutoCar magazine (Europe). Didn't get much info . . . other than the engine will probably be a 1.8 liter VVTI (same as the new Celica engine :-). . . drive train will be front wheel drive similar to CR-V, when the front wheels detect slip, it will kick into 4WD. Please note . . . these are only RUMORS! (which turned out to be FALSE!!) IMHO the photos look a little better than the last ones we saw . . . it will be interesting to see what actually shows up at the Geneva Auto Show in March. ![]() ![]() |

The following quoted article is from Auto Express . . . a magazine in the United Kingdom -
"Radical RAV4 Set To Shock It To 'em Issue 571 - AutoExpress -- Be prepared for a shock! You may find this hard to believe, but the car in these pictures has been confirmed by Toyota insiders as the next-generation RAV4. Snapped by our spy photographer while undergoing performance and brake testing in the Alps, they reveal a brand new set of clothes for the massively popular off-roader. But the radical changes venture more than skin deep. The Japanese giant's new model will feature a fresh platform and new engines, more intelligent packaging and improved interior space. As our spyshots show, the car will also be bigger, helping to close the gap up with its full-sized brothers, the Land Cruiser Colorado and Amazon. The extra size will allow the five-door off-roader to offer a stiffer challenge to the likes of the Jeep Cherokee and Subaru Forester, as well. The styling of the replacement also suggests a vehicle more suited to road-going. As with the Forester, its appearance hits a balance between estate car and 4x4. Ground clearance is reduced, which should make for even better on-road performance and behaviour. However, the chunky body remains, together with a high driving position, helping to ensure that current RAV4 owners won't feel alienated. The larger exterior dimensions will ensure better passenger and luggage space inside, with enhanced versatility. Features such as the side-opening tailgate, roof rails and extra headroom will make for a more practical car, too. Safety is also high on the agenda, with dual front and side airbags likely, alongside ABS and a stronger bodyshell. Only sketchy details of the engine line-up are known. Toyota recently announced that it wanted all its cars to be powered by motors using variable valve timing. Therefore, it seems likely that a new 2.0-litre unit will find its way under the bonnet of the RAV4. More interestingly, the next model is also set to get V6 power. Whether this would be a current engine, for instance the 190bhp 3.0-litre from the Camry, or a brand new motor is not known. Fitting a V6 in the small off-roader would be a canny move, as Land Rover is more than likely to use the excellent KV6 unit in the Freelander when it is facelifted early in 2001. Toyota's timescale for the RAV4 is likely to be very similar, placing it in a head-to-head battle with its revamped rival. The Toyota RAV4 single-handedly created the market for fashionable compact off-roaders when it was originally launched in 1994. Other manufacturers soon jumped on the bandwagon, and recent arrivals such as the Freelander, Forester, Honda CR-V and Suzuki Grand Vitara have stolen sales from the RAV4. Also, contrary to popular opinion, the compact SUV market is still thriving. It is the fastest growing of all off-road sectors, and accounted for more than 32,000 sales in the UK last year. With no sign of these figures diminishing, things look good for the launch of the new RAV4 either late next year or at the beginning of 2001. Feedback and coment to DNWire" |
