Post: #1 Posted: March 8, 2007, 2:24 pm Post subject: Brake Assist...what is it? |
|
|

| I thought that, when I read the term " brake assist" that it meant the same thing as power brakes. I have since seen a reference to brake assist meaning that the car will apply "extra" braking in an emergency situation where the driver is not using enough braking action. Anybody want to comment? |

I did a search on Toyota's web site and this is what it came back with:
"Brake Assist (BA)
In emergencies, some drivers, especially inexperienced ones, often panic and do not apply sufficient pressure on the brake pedal. Brake Assist measures the speed and force with which the brake pedal is pushed to determine whether the driver is attempting an emergency stop. If the system determines that is the case, it applies additional brake pressure to allow the driver to take full advantage of the ABS brake system. When the driver intentionally eases up on the brake pedal, the system reduces the amount of assistance it provides. This feature comes with VSC." |

Yes. Some manufacturers are using this on their cars. With brake-by-wire, they can do a lot more with brake efficiency. Brake assist is a general term. A more specific example is Dynamic Brake System from BMW where the computer applies brakes individually to the correct wheel in order to prevent the car from spinning while turning and braking hard at the same time. I'm not sure but that may also be available with our RAV4 too. Another example is when the computer compensates for brake fade. In this case, the computer will actually add more braking force to help stop the vehicle. _________________ Erwin... |

Damn, that's pretty impressive stuff if it works as advertised! Thanks for the info Raydahs. I did a search on this forum and came up empty.

Glad it helped out. I‘ve been doing research on the Toyota website for Hybrid technology. They have an okay search tool, I’ve found it comes up with the answer about 40% of the time. http://search.toyota.com/search/ |

| It does work as advertiesed. I had to apply my brake fast once and the RAV feel like it was applying max. braking power for me. |

| The Rav4 can apply the brake to any individual wheel as required by the traction conrtol system. |
