The thing about it is your pumping out 2300-2500 lumens. The OEM’s are about 1000 lumens and pale in comparison. Picture several cars driving towards you on the freeway. Even when adjusted properly you stand out like a sore thumb pumping out more than twice the amount of light. I uninstalled mine before getting pulled over and ticketed.

I don't own these but plan on trying a set of high beams soon. If they aren't too bright I might try a set of low beams, otherwise I will use the SilverStars for the low beams, which I believe (from personal use) are just right for city driving (the drawback is short bulb life.) I wonder how long the HIR hi beams will last with the factory DRLs?
Here are some interesting links:
http://www.finemotoring.com/ I don't know if US$30 is a good price..... tho apparently if you buy one of these for your Viper at the Dodge dealer it will cost US$129!
Be sure to check out this page on that website for some pics:

This is probably the most important thing to understand about these bulbs, from that link:
QUOTE:
The Toshiba bulbs are virtually identical in every regard to the 9005 and 9006 bulbs EXCEPT for extremely minor differences in the shape of the mounting flanges. HIR bulbs have a double-wide top ear on the plastic bulb base to comply with a law that requires different bulbs to have different bases. This extra-wide plastic top ear can be easily trimmed or filed to make the HIR fit the bulb receptacle of an 9005 or 9006. Once the trimming/filing is done, the HIR goes directly into the headlamp and the existing sockets snap on.
A few minutes work with a file or Dremel tool will greatly enhance the usefulness of these bulbs with regard to those cars which might not, strictly speaking, have been designed with these exact bulbs in mind. In fact, it's amazing how simple and easy it is to remove a few square millimeters of soft plastic. You can even trim them with toenail clippers, (please take a series of small "bites" instead of a big chomp). Five minutes, tops, and then these bulbs will fit in any car that takes 9005 and 9006 bulbs. Owners of certain late-model US cars have reported minor problems, easily corrected, with the shape of the vehicle's light housings. The housings never need to be modified in any way, only the bulbs. Please email if you have any questions about specific fit and suitability factors.
Given the extra resulting illumination, it is essential that your headlights be properly aligned to assure safety when using HIR bulbs. In addition, you should check with your local authorities to be sure that there is no legal restrictions to using the HIR in your area

http://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=11932 A Land Cruiser Lighting Upgrade FAQ... scroll down to read about HIR bulbs. Very interesting.
Link
Thread on "how are your HIR bulbs doing" - it appears they last far longer than standard halogens, so the extra cost becomes irrelevant if you keep the car more than a couple of years.
Hope this helps. _________________ John E Davies

Given the sheer number of HID and fake HID's (with tons of glare) which drive around my area of NNJ, I'll bet they would never notice the HIR's in the low beam.
The finemotoring website, claims 1875 lumens for the low beam, as compared to 1000 for standard halogen. I do not plan to replace the high beams, as they are a claimed 2500 lumens, compared to 1700 for standard, and my current high beams work just fine for where I drive (I might feel otherwise in another area).
BTW, I usually drive with only the low beams, not lows plus fog. |

If you would have asked me about a year ago… I would have just given them to you. I did this mod early on this year and took them out because of being flash to dim more often than none. I gave them to my little brother and he installed them in his truck. He thinks its funny when on coming drivers flash to dim and then he blinds the hell out of them. I told him… Piss off the wrong person and your just asking for trouble.

Think about it… if you have to modify them there not DOT approved.
I’m not saying the HIR’s are a terrible thing. They perform beautifully. I just think its ‘overkill’ for everyday night time driving in the city. Even when adjusted properly. All drivers see is your set of headlights are much brighter than the next and they automatically think you have the high beams on.
I went with the GE MegaLights which put out more than enough light… even on the darkest roads.

Ravon,
What model RAV were you using the HIR's in?
Your prior posts in the 4.2 forum indicated that you were using HIR's in both low beams and fog lights at the same time.
Unmodified 2006/2007's use H11's in the fog lights, so this isn't an option.
If you were referring to a prior model, are the characteristics of the headlights the same as the 2006/2007? |
