Hey fellow Ravers, question for you:
My RAV4 has a noise that comes from the passenger side, more specifically it SOUNDS like it's coming from the dash's air vent (rightmost and uppermost vent facing the passenger) but it's likely not coming from there. I can't seem to narrow down its origin, but it's somewhere near the vent. It is only audible when going ~60-80kmh. Sounds like a flapping noise, almost, and nothing I've tried seems to get rid of it - cracking the window, moving the side view mirror, pressing on random spots in case there's a rattle behind it, and Ieven tried removing the antenna to see if that was it.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Tips? Suggestions?

Looks like with 130 views of your post and no response you have a unique problem.

Looks like a dealer service dept problem to fix.

Reminds me a problem on a previous car that I spent weeks trying to track down and finally took the car in to have the service guy say "oh it is the XXX is loose" will have it fixed while you wait.

Might see if there is something in their tech database that can id this for you.

Just a thought.....When I was under My RAV4 Limited, their is a flexible covering under the engine compartment. The covering seemed very flexible and not very well secured all around. I placed a couple of zip ties where I felt that the plastic may "flap around". You may want to give this a look! Best of luck.

I got the same sound. Haven't figured it out yet. Drives me crazy. I'll post a solution if I find one!

I have the same knocking / rattling sound that seemed to come from the front passenger side. It's not the glove boxes and I thought it might be the air-con filter that's behind the bottom glove box.

I think I had the same problem as you guys did. It sounded like a tapping or flapping noise from the passenger A piller area. I found that there is a little plastic cover on the under side of that mirror that was loose. I removed that piece, and my noise was gone.

Hi Jeff,
Could you please post a photo? Thanks.

All 4 our windows are loose and rattle like crazy. I tried putting pressure to the windows so they can settle in. But apparently, it's no help. There's a center point which the window sits on and seems to just teeter about that point.

Another thing I noticed that causes noise is the passenger seat belt latch hitting the door panel.

I stand in line with the same problem on my Rav 4. Drove me nuts the other day so I was testing some things out. Pushing the fold button for the mirrors causes some relief the noise, but wasn't completely gone.

Now with what Jeff Warkentin said comfirms the issue. I'll take a look at the mirror(s) and remove any loose bits.

It does sound like it's coming from everywhere around the passenger door.

This is the pannel I took off. Solve my wind and flapping noise.

Picture is in my album.

Positional origin of noise can be deceptive. Another place to check would be the tightness of the lug nuts on your roof rack. Check all 8... they should be hand tight...

Thanks for the pic, Jeff. Much appreciated.
I tapped the piece lightly and it sounded like what I've heard from the driver's seat. The panel for the driver's side mirror is not loose. I notice there's a slot to pry the panel loose. But before I remove it, I'll try to pack the panel with foam or secure it with some tape. Then I'll drive around to see whether the sound goes away. From your pic, I could see the cables for the mirror control. I'll check to see that they are tied properly and not hitting the panel.

Jeff Warkentin, you are my new best friend. And I think my wife and I are in love with you. No, you can't have her.

Your post saying you thought the sound came from a little panel under the mirror was bang on. I'll admit when you first suggested it, and after I looked at it (sans screwdriver, so no chance to pry it off) I thought you'd likely had a few too many to drink before posting that. But on the weekend I finally remembered to give your trick a try and it worked OH SO GOOD.

Took it for a ride with the panel removed and my ride was as quiet as the day we got it. I put the panel back on and it's not making noise anymore. Perhaps there was something in there rattling around with the wind, or maybe it wasn't on right. Either way, thank you thank you thank you. I'd never have thought of that.

If you ever run for Mayor of a city let me know, I'll somehow post illegal votes in your favor.

Add my kudos to Jeff Warkentin and his mirror fix. It worked for my rattle too.

Buy that man a beer!
